OpenAI has slashed prices for its most powerful reasoning model, o3, by 80%, making advanced AI more accessible to developers. The cost now stands at $2 per million input tokens and $8 for output tokens (down from $10 and $40). If the input is previously cached, users get a further discount—just $0.50 per million.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the price drop on X, encouraging developers to explore the model’s full potential. This move puts OpenAI in tighter competition with models like Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro, Claude Opus 4, and DeepSeek Reasoner, some of which are still significantly more expensive.
The pricing shift makes o3 one of the most cost-effective high-performance models, especially for startups and developers previously limited by high costs. It also introduces a "flex mode" for custom compute needs, charging $5 for input and $20 for output.
