US is about to ban TikTok
On January 18, TikTok announced it was shutting down operations in the U.S. after the Supreme Court upheld a law requiring its parent company, ByteDance, to divest from the app by January 19. The reason? Concerns about data security and potential access by the Chinese government.
Just when it seemed like the end, President-elect Donald Trump stepped in. He promised to sign an executive order that could postpone the ban, mentioning a possible 90-day extension for TikTok to sort things out.
In a surprising twist, TikTok was back online just hours after the shutdown on January 19. This happened right as Trump celebrated its return at a rally.
With around 170 million users in the U.S., the initial ban raised concerns about accessibility. While existing users could still access the app, new downloads were off-limits, which could lead to some security headaches down the line.
The law is still on the books, leaving many wondering what this means for TikTok’s future in America. Will there be more twists and turns? Only time will tell!
